Why choose James Field Counselling?

I am a qualified counsellor and Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  This is your guarantee that I am committed to working in a safe, professional and ethical manner.  To find out more about how to stay safe when looking for a counsellor click here.

I trained in integrative counselling at the prestigious Iron Mill College in Exeter where I now manage their affordable counselling service alongside running my own private counselling practice.  You can find out more about me and what sort of counsellor I am here.

Whilst I trust in the training, knowledge, experience and skills I bring to the counselling room, the most encouraging feedback I get from my clients is that they feel I really understand them and their problems.  I believe that this in itself can transform lives.

If, for any reason, I don’t think I can help you with your problems I will tell you straight away so you don’t waste your time or money.

I’ve written more here about what you can expect from a free, initial consultation with me here.

What actually happens during a counselling session?

Everyone’s experience of counselling will be different so there is no easy, short answer to this.  If you would like a longer answer I have written about how I work and my counselling philosophy in more depth here.

In a nutshell, you can expect your counselling sessions to be a time when we will both be completely focussed on you and your needs.  This means that, for the most part, you will talk whilst I actively listen.  Together we will explore the areas that you most need to change I won’t shy away from any aspect of your life that you might need to talk about.  However dark it might get.

There are times when words are just too difficult or aren’t able to adequately express what we’re feeling and there are others ways we can work at these times.

I can offer techniques and tools to help you manage particular difficulties in your life although my main focus will always be to help you discover the resources that already exist within you.  For many of us, to be truly seen and heard by another human being is a rare experience and healing by itself.

I will never diagnose you or try to tell you what you should do.  Clients have told me that whilst sessions with me can be challenging, they look forward to them and find them rewarding.
