Initial Consultation

If you are looking for a counsellor or therapist I offer a free, initial consultation so you can decide whether you want to work with me.  For more advice on finding the right counsellor for you please click here.

The Purpose of the Initial Consultation

I understand that choosing a counsellor can be daunting, particularly if it’s your first time.  You can only tell so much about a potential therapist from their online presence so I like to give all my clients a chance to meet me face to face before choosing me as their counsellor.

The initial consultation is also a chance for me to learn a little about you and I how I can best support you.

What Can You Expect From the Initial Consultation

When you arrive, once you’ve made yourself comfortable, we will talk about what’s going to happen during the session and the importance of and limits to confidentiality.  I will answer any questions and attempt to address any concerns or anxieties you might have.

You will then have a chance to tell your story and what you want to get from counselling.  Some people find this pours out of them with ease whilst others find it harder to articulate.  There is no right or wrong way to do this and I will make it as easy as possible for you.

If you’re feeling anxious during the session I will do my best to put you at ease.  If you find that emotions well up or you become lost for words, that’s OK.

There will also be time for you to ask any questions you might have about me or my practice.

What Happens If We Go On To Work Together?

We will arrange a time and date for our first counselling session together and I will give you some information about my business practices.

You can find out more about my business contract and data consent by clicking here.

What Happens If We Don’t Go On To Work Together?

If, at the end of the session, I don’t think that I will be able to help you with your needs I will do my best to point you in the direction of someone who can.

If you don’t think I will be right counsellor for you, you can let me know at the end of the session or have a think about it and let me know later.  You might, for example, want to meet some more counsellors before making a choice.  If you decide not to return after the initial consultation I will destroy any personal data you have provided me with and any notes I might have taken.
